A 1600s silver-mining town perched in the mountains about 90 minutes inland from the coast. North of Nuevo Vallarta, the coast opens into a string of smaller beach towns that form the Riviera Nayarit. Towns like Sayulita and San Pancho are roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Puerto Vallarta — close enough for a day trip, distinct enough to feel like a real escape.

Sayulita has become known as a bohemian surf town with a small-town beach vibe. The main beach gets waves most of the year, and you'll find a walkable town center with casual restaurants, galleries, and local shops. San Pancho, just minutes away, is quieter and more residential — a fishing village that has remained less developed. It appeals to travelers looking for a genuine beach community feel without the commercial activity of its neighbor.

Both towns are accessible by car from Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta. The drive itself becomes part of the trip; the coastal highway passes through other small communities and offers views of both ocean and jungle. Unlike San Sebastián, these towns are at sea level but offer a completely different atmosphere from the larger resort areas.
